Planting Early Awareness through a Climate Change Workshop

Â
On September 12, YSI facilitated a workshop at SD BOPKRI Sidomulyo 1 in Godean, Sleman to strengthen climate justice literacy among children. The session was attended by 53 students from grades 4 and 5. The YSI team was warmly welcomed by the children that morning.
Â
Rizky opened the session with an introduction and interactive questions about the current condition of the Earth. The children shared what they observed and how those changes might relate to climate change. Their enthusiastic responses created a lively atmosphere. The discussion became even more engaging when the children watched an educational video about climate change, providing them with clear visual examples.
Â
After the video, Wiva led the next session by explaining what climate change is, its causes, impacts, and simple actions that can be done to address it. The children listened attentively, took notes, and actively responded to questions since many of them had learned about the topic before.
Â

Â
The discussion flowed energetically. Some children mentioned practical actions such as planting trees, managing waste, bringing their own tumblers, and using cloth bags. To assess understanding, the facilitators invited the children to play a card game where they categorized illustrations into causes, impacts, or actions related to climate change.
Â

Â
This workshop aimed to strengthen children’s understanding of the ongoing global climate crisis. In many developing countries, children are often excluded from climate discussions, even though Indonesia is among the countries most affected. Through this activity, the children were encouraged to recognize their situation, care about their environment, and take small but meaningful actions. The workshop emphasized that understanding and reflection should lead to awareness and action, no matter how small.
Â
The workshop lasted about one and a half hours. The children showed enthusiasm and openness toward learning about climate issues. Mrs. Rika, one of the teachers who accompanied the session, expressed her gratitude to the YSI team for bringing such an engaging and rarely discussed topic to the students, helping them stay focused from beginning to end. The YSI team closed the day with a promise to return and continue supporting the children’s learning journey on climate change, climate justice, and their rights as children affected by these issues.
