Program Activities

Outing Class of SD BOPKRI Sidomulyo 1 with Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia at Madukismo Sugar Factory

The activity aimed to give students direct exposure to how sugarcane processing relates to climate action. Students of SD BOPKRI Sidomulyo 1 observed practices at the Madukismo sugar factory to understand how the industry manages its operations and responds to environmental challenges.

Waste management plays an important role in reducing emissions. Industrial activities produce liquid, solid, and gas waste. Poor management increases pollution that affects the climate. The visit showed the link between production processes, waste treatment, and mitigation efforts. Students needed to see this process to understand that industrial decisions influence the environment.

The outing class involved 82 fourth and fifth grade students accompanied by YSI. The goal was to strengthen students understanding of industry, the environment, and children’s rights to a safe environment. Students observed production stages, types of waste, and pollution sources at the factory.

Students followed the sugarcane processing flow from start to finish. They learned about extraction, purification, evaporation, crystallization, and packaging. They noted how the factory treated liquid and solid waste. The waste was processed and reused as an energy source for the machines. Students understood that this step helped reduce air pollution.

Some students noted that the factory used waste as fertilizer. They also observed chimney monitoring to keep emissions within limits. Their notes reflected an understanding of how production activities connect with environmental impacts.

After the visit, students completed worksheets guided by teachers, YSI staff, and factory workers. Their answers showed comprehension of production processes and environmental risks. Some students proposed ideas like planting trees around the factory and improving filtration systems.

A teacher said that students understood environmental issues more easily after seeing the production process. Students shared that they learned waste could be processed and reused. The school plans a follow up classroom discussion on climate change and industrial responsibility. The activity gave students direct experience of how sugarcane processing connects to climate action. Students learned not only in theory but through real practice.
