20 Years of YSI: Learning Values and Spirit from Pak Humphrey and Bang Frans

April 30 has always been a special day for Yayasan SHEEP Indonesia (YSI). Each year, this date is celebrated as the organization’s anniversary. However, this year feels even more meaningful as YSI marks its 20th anniversary. Two decades is certainly not a short journey—making this year’s commemoration not only a celebration, but also a moment of reflection.

Reflection is crucial to revisit what YSI has accomplished over the years, the impact it has made—particularly for communities—and the extent to which the values and spirit upheld by the organization are still being lived out by all its members. Rooted in this spirit of reflection, the 20th anniversary ceremony carried the theme: "Learning Values and Spirit from Pah Humphrey and Bang Frans." Who are these two figures?

Pah Humphrey and Bang Frans are two key figures in YSI's history. Their roles as Chair and Secretary of the Board of Trustees have been deeply meaningful in the organization’s journey. They served as sources of inspiration, insight, and exemplary leadership—especially in instilling values of service, solidarity with marginalized communities, upholding cultural sensitivity in work relationships, discipline, and a spirit of togetherness. These lessons are priceless, not only documented in official records but also embedded in the memories of those who knew Pah Humphrey and Bang Frans. One of their enduring legacies is a motto often repeated by Pah Humphrey—a quote from Albert Einstein: "A life lived for others is a life worthwhile." This quote remains not just a recognized motto within YSI, but the very breath that has guided its service throughout the past 20 years.

As a tribute and a continuation of this spirit, YSI invited friends, colleagues, and family members of Pah Humphrey and Bang Frans to the peak event of the anniversary celebration. The purpose was to reignite the flame of their legacy and values, especially to inspire the younger staff. It served as a collective reminder that in every act of service, values and spirit are the compass that must be preserved and passed on.

Beyond the ceremony, this moment also served as a warm reunion for those who have been part of YSI’s extended family—from its beginnings, through its journey, and into its present. As the event closed, all participants were invited to write down their hopes and dreams for the future of YSI. These written wishes were placed into a time capsule, to be opened again during YSI’s 25th anniversary celebration.
